Build a workers’ republic inside a Martian ice crater, where every new home makes a claim on the common breath.

Premise Approved

Red Well began as an extraction camp and declared itself a commune when its Earth sponsor tried to price the air. Elected work brigades rotate through ice cutting, cultivation and repair; public honor belongs to people who return scarce material to common use, and the mood is stubborn, warm and watchful.

Environment Approved

A broad impact crater holds exposed blue ice in shaded cuts, wind-polished red gravel on the floor and steep basalt ledges that divide the buildable terraces. Dust storms turn the sky copper; outside travel uses suited porters and marked paths, while excavated ice pockets leave exhausted, unstable ground that can be reclaimed for building.

Architecture Approved

First-camp basalt-aggregate vaults and bolted aluminum ribs remain the ordinary fabric, but newer housing follows Chinese work-unit compounds: short pressure blocks face glazed communal courts shared with canteens and workshops. Russian Constructivist bridge galleries and stair towers join these courts to workplaces; Cuban revolutionary brick-vault experiments inspire fused-regolith learning halls, while Central Asian socialist-modernist geometric art becomes colored glass and enamel relief on civic fronts. Red murals depict gloved workers passing ice and oxygen between brigades, and precise salvaged joints and legible repairs honor collective labor rather than private patrons.

Gameplay Approved

Ice cutters exhaust nearby veins, water works turn ice into water, and algae farms and oxygen plants supply the cartridges that homes desire; suited walkers carry each good between yards. Homes also want a nearby common kitchen and heat from connected steam conduits, so long commutes and scattered housing slow production and goodwill. Expand across crater terraces, reclaim spent cuts and pool enough goods and goodwill to raise the Dawn Beacon.

# Red Well architecture motifs Red Well honours collective labour. Its signature is heavy stepped basalt (#34383C) buttresses and vaults bound by broad pressure-aluminum (#B5BAB7) bands, red (#C53F35) public entrances, and, on a few civic and work buildings only, bold relief panels of collective labour: gloved fists, hands passing ice and oxygen, tools and forward-looking worker profiles. A relief is carved into or set flat against a wall face in a few broad planes, set off from the wall by one contrasting colour, so its outline reads from far away. Nothing sculptural stands free, rises above a roof or juts out from the building. The figures are anonymous workers, never leaders or patrons, and there are no murals or painted pictures. Ordinary housing stays plain and humane. 1. **Work-unit court corner.** In the Chinese-inspired housing tradition, two low, flat-roofed basalt-aggregate pressure blocks meet at a right angle around one broad sheet of glazed court, braced at the outer corner by one heavy stepped buttress; the outer faces show only a few narrow slot windows, while one wide red door opens into the court. 2. **Bridge gallery.** The Russian Constructivist strand sends one straight, boxy aluminum gallery with a continuous glass band across a gap, landing on a tall red stair tower that leans forward into a sharp cantilevered prow, crossed by one broad diagonal stripe of glass. 3. **Collective airlock.** Above a pair of tall red doors in a deep squared aluminum frame, a flat basalt wall carries two colossal gloved hands in bold aluminum relief, gripping one huge red valve wheel between them; hands and wheel read by their outline against the dark wall. 4. **Canteen serving window.** A long, low opening is cut into a thick basalt-aggregate block, its single aluminum shutter folded up into a deep, heavy cantilevered canopy over one broad red counter. 5. **Learning-hall vault.** Inspired by Cuban revolutionary school vaults, three shallow red fused-regolith shells rise one after another over a public entrance, braced by a heavy basalt buttress whose flat face carries a colossal worker's profile in bold aluminum relief, gazing forward and upward. 6. **Ice-to-air relief.** A tall flat basalt wall panel on a stepped plinth carries one colossal raised forearm and gloved fist in bold aluminum relief, gripping a big block of glacial blue (#A9CFD9) ice; the whole shape lies within the panel like a deep-cut stencil. 7. **Geometric light screen.** The Central Asian socialist-modernist strand fills a tall public-hall window with four or five big stepped blocks of blue, amber (#E3B46E) and red glass in one deep aluminum frame, set into thick basalt. 8. **Brigade repair seam.** A giant aluminum hammer in bold relief, its head as long as a doorway is tall, lies flat and diagonal across a dark basalt vault as the strap that holds one broad pale patch in place. 9. **Assembly hall end.** A broad glazed end wall stands between stepped basalt buttresses under a deep red barrel vault; the flat semicircular face of the vault above the glass carries two striding worker figures in bold aluminum relief, holding one great ring between them.

# Red Well environment motifs 1. **Blue ice rib.** A jagged seam of cloudy glacial blue ice stands waist-high through rust-red gravel, with dark dust trapped in its layers and fresh hand-tool chips at its foot; a suited worker beside it gives scale. 2. **Wind-combed crater floor.** Low parallel ridges of iron-red grit curl around black basalt cobbles and half-buried survey pins, each ridge no higher than a worker's boot; a pair of deep suit prints crosses them. 3. **Shadow ledge.** A two-person-high wall of fractured charcoal basalt overhangs a narrow terrace, protecting a thin shelf of pale blue frost while the sunlit face is polished umber by dust. 4. **Spent ice cut.** An abandoned excavation sinks one person deep into the terrace, its exposed ice gone and its loose slate-grey rubble held by a rough ring of numbered salvage stakes. 5. **Copper storm veil.** A dense sheet of ochre airborne dust nearly hides a shoulder-high route marker, leaving only its small red lamp and the darker outlines of a suited porter and taut guide cable visible. 6. **Reclaimed ground.** A former extraction hollow is packed with angular black basalt chips beneath a tamped red gravel cap, its straight edge still marked by pale ice fragments and boot-worn communal footpaths.

Deep signal enamel recalls painted brigade boards against the basalt crater. Ice-blue selections mark shared resources, amber flags heat and work in progress, and compact tabular numbers make every communal stock legible. Squared panels and stamped icon silhouettes echo bolted aluminum and civic reliefs without changing familiar navigation.

Shared placeholder icons · Bold enamel stamps with wide cuts: ice shard, joined hands, water vessel, breath fan, heat conduit and beacon ring. Keep distinct silhouettes and accessible labels.

The Common Breath

84 BPM · minor-pentatonic

A six-beat ice-hauling cadence becomes a warm communal work song, while its motif rings sparsely across the ravines.

Nature · Across the cut

Glass tones state the five-note call over low haze, with long gaps and occasional light metal reflections suggesting the scale of the exposed ice ravine.

City · Shared shift

Two groups of three beats support a low pulse call and warm organ answer. Metal and plate accents mark work without becoming a march.
