City personality

Deep Tide occupies a folded basalt shelf around a chain of abyssal thermal vents. Seen across the black water, its neighborhoods resemble colonies of pale, ribbed organisms: squat shell chambers, overlapping coral buttresses and occasional luminous glass lobes. Buildings grow outward in inhabited increments, leaving seams that record generations of cultivation. Blue and green light traces openings and passageways; most of the city remains dark enough for distant creatures to appear as moving absences. The oldest domestic quarters cling low to the shelf. Basalt footings anchor engineered mineral shells whose thick, rounded walls enclose dry rooms; living cold-water coral grows over external ribs, thickening supports without serving as the sole pressure barrier. A family adds a chamber by nursing a new shell beside the old one, then joining their bronze-ringed locks. The resulting houses have unequal lobes, sheltered clefts and little circular windows set deeply into their walls. Streets alternate between enclosed rib-vaulted passages and open swimming lanes. Doorways face shared lock courts where residents exchange supplies, tend growth beds and wait for pressure cycles together. Working districts beside the vents developed a more exposed marine engineering tradition. Replaceable ceramic jackets cover squat pressure vessels, while oxidized bronze frames carry intake bells, service gantries and bundles of insulated pipes. Their silhouettes rise in stepped banks toward the heat supply, with generous gaps through which plumes and debris can escape. Coral is kept away from moving joints and hot equipment. Reused shell sections become protective hoods and retaining walls; patches remain conspicuous so maintenance crews can read a structure's history. A carefully fitted repair earns more respect here than an unbroken decorative surface. Later civic construction spans broader ground with ribbed shell vaults, paired buttresses and clusters of pressure-rated glass bubbles seated in heavy collars. Large clear panes are scarce and costly to replace: they concentrate around communal gathering rooms, observation chambers and cultivated gardens, while ordinary rooms use smaller cast lenses. Prestige lies in a patient, continuous pattern of shell growth and precisely aligned ribs, rather than sheer height. Some institutions retain opaque ancestral chambers inside new transparent envelopes, making their differing generations legible from every side. Barnacle-white mineral surfaces catch the city's restrained illumination. Bronze appears at locks, ties and glazing seats, with green oxidation across exposed fittings and polished contact edges. Phosphorescent yellow marks refuge entrances and the edges of dangerous machinery; it is sparse enough to remain readable through drifting particles. Bioluminescent cultures inhabit replaceable channels under eaves and inside rib recesses, giving light a sheltered, tended quality. Kelp gardens grow in illuminated terraces beneath glass and around warm effluent outfalls, their cultivation lamps occasionally casting narrow shafts down through the water. Broad daylight never reaches this depth. The city leaves dark corridors between districts for migrating animals and keeps its tallest structures clear of unstable vent chimneys. Rear elevations carry cultivation racks, hatch collars and inspection routes as deliberately composed as public fronts. Pressure groans travel through adjoining shells, vents bubble below the courts, and sparse sonar pings cross long silences. Whale song arrives from far above, reminding residents that the inhabited shelf is only a small ledge in an immense vertical ocean.

# Deep Tide — Exterior motifs Grid order: left to right, top to bottom. 1. **Nest Lens.** In the oldest domestic tradition, a small circular cast-glass lens sits deep inside a flared barnacle-white mineral socket, secured by a recessed bronze retaining ring. Uneven concentric growth ridges wrap the socket, while a removable blue bioluminescent channel lights only its lower lip. 2. **Grafted Chamber Seam.** Where successive domestic shell lobes meet, two rounded white shoulders flank a narrow oxidized-bronze coupling band whose regularly spaced clamps remain accessible. Younger, smoother mineral growth stops short of the band, and paired coral fans rise along the adjacent fixed ribs without bridging the service gap. 3. **Rooted Buttress.** A low domestic buttress forks into three thick mineral toes keyed into a dark basalt footing, with living cold-water coral clustered on its upper shoulder. Bronze anchor shoes remain visible at the base, and a shallow groove between the toes allows settling silt to wash through. 4. **Vent Jacket.** In the working districts, overlapping curved ceramic plates form a blunt protective hood around the exterior of a pressure vessel, held by exposed bronze straps. One replacement plate is darker and smoother than its neighbors, with a narrow phosphorescent-yellow edge beside an unobstructed maintenance latch. 5. **Salvaged Shell Awning.** The repair tradition reuses a broken shell segment as a crescent hood over an industrial service hatch, supporting it on triangular bronze brackets. Its chipped perimeter is bound with fitted ceramic staples, while polished fasteners and a coral-free clearance distinguish the maintained hatch from the older rough shell. 6. **Tended Light Eave.** Above an ordinary passage entrance, short mineral ribs project into a scalloped eave carrying individual green bioluminescent culture cartridges in sheltered bronze clips. One cartridge is visibly shorter where a rib was repaired, making the replaceable lighting follow the irregular grown edge rather than a continuous neon outline. 7. **Civic Bubble Seat.** In the later civic tradition, a clear convex glass lobe rests in a massive oval bronze collar between two smoothly grown white shell ribs. Closely spaced radial retaining blocks and a fine double gasket line articulate the expensive glazing joint, with a small blue culture inset at the collar's lowest point. 8. **Cultivation Terrace Comb.** On a garden's exterior, a curved bronze rack cantilevers from mineral wall bosses above a warm-water outlet, holding separate ceramic planting cups in a descending comb. Long kelp ribbons trail upward from the cups, while recessed blue-green cultivation lamps under the rack illuminate the growth and leave its service fasteners exposed. 9. **Refuge Lock Crown.** A communal refuge entrance has a squat oval bronze hatch recessed beneath a thick ribbed shell arch, with its outer wheel and locking dogs readable from the swimming lane. Three short phosphorescent-yellow ceramic inserts mark the arch crown, and heavily polished handholds interrupt the green oxidation beside the threshold.

Deep blue-green panels evoke thick pressure glass seen against abyssal water. Barnacle-white text sits within rounded double rims that recall grown shell and bronze glazing collars. Clear, softly rounded sans-serif lettering keeps communal controls welcoming; monospace numbers borrow the legibility of maintenance gauges. Cyan identifies action, cultivated green identifies selection, and phosphorescent yellow is reserved for warnings and keyboard focus. Spacious rows and stable left alignment make the interface calm rather than theatrical. Feedback uses persistent labels, selection marks and focus outlines alongside color; disabled controls keep their labels and subdued contrast. No pulsing text or simulated sunlight is needed.

Shared placeholder icons · Rounded shell-white line silhouettes with a single cyan inset, open counters and blunt terminals; use bronze collar shapes sparingly around habitat or pressure controls. Resources must have distinct silhouettes, selection adds a check mark, and warnings retain a recognizable warning symbol with text. Keep all accessible labels and standard navigation meanings.

Pressure Choir

48 BPM · minor-pentatonic

A slow six-beat pressure cycle joins distant synthetic calls, submerged glass pings and restrained bronze maintenance rhythms.

Nature · Open abyss

Long low synth tones suggest remote animal calls, haze chords suggest pressure groans, and sparse glass tones suggest sonar and rising vent droplets; these are synthesized impressions, not field recordings.

City · Inhabited shells

The same motif becomes a sparse glass signal above a deterministic six-eighth-note pump cycle, low bass and occasional recorded bronze-like impacts.
