The Ear of the Abyss

A freestanding abyssal civic listening monument assembled from cultivated mineral shell segments and engineered bronze joints. Replace the earlier leaning oval and anatomical curl with one perfectly upright elongated octagonal frame. Preserve its enormous empty center, quiet listening and memorial purpose, barnacle-white material, bronze collars, paired supports and a single small blue-green listening lens below the opening.

The front silhouette is an elongated octagon: a horizontal top, two clipped upper corners, two long vertical sides, two clipped lower corners and a horizontal bottom. Overall height including the base is about one and a half times width. Three nested octagonal rims form a stepped reveal, each with flat front faces and constant extrusion depth, largest at the rear and smallest at the front. All eight straight segments join cleanly at miters; no twisting, tapering curl, spiral or backward lean. The aperture passes unobstructed through every rim. Thick ivory mineral cladding panels show a few shallow straight growth seams, with green-bronze clamps at the eight outer corners. Eight slim cyan culture strips sit flush within the inner reveal, each shorter than its corresponding edge.

Two squat trapezoidal piers support the lower-left and lower-right corners of the frame and terminate on flat basalt feet. Each pier encloses a short horizontal cylindrical pressure pod with a simple domed cap; the pods are the occupied memorial rooms. A low straight bronze tie connects the piers below the aperture. One small shallow convex blue-green listening lens, no more than one eighth of the total monument height in diameter, sits in a heavy bronze collar at the center of this tie. It is wholly below the aperture and never suspended in the opening. Three tiny flush portholes are aligned on each pier, six total; their diameter is no more than one fortieth of the total height. A small circular bronze lock on the front of the right pier has three short yellow refuge marks above it. No oversized lights or luminous balls.

Left side shows the straight stepped depth of the three rims, the short pod and one fixed maintenance ladder; right side shows the other pod and lock collar. The rear is a flat octagonal bronze-backed frame with eight visible joint plates and one service hatch on each pod. From above, the frame is a narrow straight bar with stepped thickness, the pods extend behind the two ends, and the small listening lens projects slightly forward at center. All roof surfaces are either flat mineral caps or simple cylindrical pod shells. Keep sparse coral restricted to the left basalt foot, leaving service fittings clear. No scenery, literal ear anatomy, suspended orb, glass infill across the aperture, freeform ribbing or swelling membrane.
